My Notes: – Topic 7: Healthcare and Healthcare Systems

Notes for video in supplementary materials:

Socio-economic statuses, race, and gender all play a part in sociological analyses of issues re: healthcare.

Socioeconomic access is a pressing issue; poor people are less likely to have health insurance through their employer and often are less willing to seek care due to not having money.

Holding constant for socioeconomic status, race affects health outcomes across the board. This is believed to be attributable to the stress of living in a society built partly upon racism.

Gender is a nuanced portion of this discussion. Women tend to live more than men, but still receive inferior treatment in healthcare contexts. Men tend to lead more unhealthy lifestyles due to gendered norms in society, and are less likely to seek healthcare even as they engage in riskier behaviors. Women are, however, less likely to be taken seriously by doctors. It is often assumed they are being hysterical or dramatic, instead of experiencing real issues.
